| Kate and I (finally) attended our local Russian Orthodox church (which we've told ourselves we wanted to do for more than a year). We happened to be there for a special service (the regional (i know that's the wrong word) Bishop performed the liturgy) which meant the litargy was mixed Russian and English and lasted about 2 1/2 hours. Here's the kicker: Orthodox is obviously very old school and as such it is unholy to sit. So no pews or benches. After standing for 2 1/2 hours a recent knee injury (ahh softball) has revisted me (and decided to stay awhile)- which means I have to again take these awful anti-inflammatory drugs which made my stomach a shredded acidic mess (in addition to not playing softball and my knee occasionally feeling like it's on fire). Hath God smote me?
Other than that the church was very small but very beautiful. I didn't understand most of the litargy but i am looking forward to learning more.
I saw Shopgirl which was good but not great.
I read a great book on the fall of the Soviet Union called Lenin's Tomb In general I've been far more interested in history and biography than any sort of fiction. kind of silly considering I rarely watch documantaries and cringe when I see the title card 'based on a true story.'
and I'm going to be an uncle...

| I am now the proud owner of a 2001 Volkswagen Passat. Considering my previous car purchase was a Saturn (nearly 5 years ago) I notice that I may be succeptible to marketing campaigns that imply their owners become mebers of a pseudo-kitchy cult. If you remember the whole Saturn-cult marketing campaigns of the mid 2000's and pretty much the present VW ones...
Car shopping is never all that pleasant. I spent the last 3 weeks or so going through the torure of deciding what car to buy, how much I can afford, what will be the best buy etc. My brain is currently overloaded with information I wish I could excrete with last night's sushi- but no. I can tell you what is included in the 'weather package' on 2000 through 2003 Volvo S40's and what the changes were between the early model year 2001 Passats and the later 2001 (A.K.A. 2001.5).
While I have now deleted the cars.com, kelley blue book, carsdirect and autotrader bookmarks I must continue the yuppie consumer research-we need to buy a couch.
I feel really uncomfortable doing all this shopping. I still have latent hipster anti-comsumer inclinations. But what can I do? I need a place to sit and watch my DVDs in 5.1 Surround... I need a car that will no longer be the runt of my apartment parking garage... Yeah, yeah, I'm using the word 'need.'
I need a drink, the terrors are near. | | |
| Moby's new album, Hotel was released yesterday. While I have not been much a fan of Moby since I bought 18, (and decided it has only 4 decent songs) I still have the compulsion to purchase his albums on the day they are released. After one full listen through the album i am pleased. Not giddy, but pleased. He's completed the transition into just being a pop artist, I won't complain. I've gotten more boring as I get older also. I might soon be the owner of a Volkswagon. I am ridiculously happy about our new kitchenware. I derive pleasure from a clean kitchen. So who am i to complain that Moby is making pop music? Hotel has 5 good, singable upbeat songs and a 10 quieter or midtempo songs. I even like the current US single 'Beautiful.' I must admit the lyrics are just about as textured and interesting as they have always been. (Read: there is no significant difference between his new songs and his old techno stuff in which nothing is said save a woman repeating 'I'm feeling so real' 60 times.) I'll listen to it a few more times and see how I feel then. | | |
| Reading my last post makes the long absence seem ominous. I'm tempted to add something dark.. like ..After typing this post, he not only never slept alone, but now sleeps forever...
Actually that's not nearly as dark as I wish it was. I haven't been writing anything at all for the last few months. So.. as you can see, I'm rusty.
I've running through the routine of work, commute, dinner, sleep, commute. Kate and I now live in Pasadena which we are terribly happy about. It just seems like there isn'y any time leftover after all that.
Unfortunately I spend about 2 1/2 hours in my car everyday but that's only temporary. For one, we have to buy a second car. Secondly, Kate has very little driving experience so she wanted me to ride with her for a month or so until she feels comfortable driving along through L.A. rus hour traffic. At first it was hellish, trying to teach someone who has barely driven at all how to manuever through the worst traffic in the nation but she's doing just fine now-I just need to get another car.
I've taken quite a liking to Spongebob Squarepants, especially since we now have DVR and I've seen just about every episode of The Simpsons.
Recent music I've been listening to: M. Ward, trying out Matador, still lots of Wilco, Sufjan Stevens, always some Lightning Bolt.
It looks like I will be going to NAB. (The annual convention/exposition for the National Broadcaster's Association (I think that's it.)) I have officlaly crossed the line into no-turning-back geekiness. I am so excited about checking out new High Definition cameras and editing software and such-all officially for work but let's be realistic, I'd go for myself at the drop of a hat. The downside is that it is in Las Vegas, which I'm not a big fan of. I don't trust myself to gamble and I don't have money to blow.
I need to think about something other than work.
A number of good screwball comedies have finally been released on DVD I recommend renting them: The Palm Beach Story My Favorite Wife
